With 900 incoming students, Willis Independent School District was in need of more space and new schools. One of these planned schools is Willis Elementary #7. The construction of this school was approved and passed by the citizens as part of a 2022 bond, and construction began in the spring of 2024.
Project Overview
The new elementary campus is set to open in the summer of 2026 and will be a total of 107,418 square feet. The new school is located directly behind Grand Oaks High School. The construction is being overseen by Stewart Builders Inc., serving as the general contractor. The steel is being erected by Steel Masters. Supporting the structure are 445 tons of fabricated steel, plus 63 tons of steel for the joist, for a total of 508 tons of steel supplied and fabricated by the team here at Myrex Industries.
Supporting Future Generations
Structural steel was built to last. That’s one of the reasons that it is chosen for so many projects. When a school or educational institution uses steel as the backbone of their buildings, they are not just providing a learning environment for the current generation but also for many generations to come. With proper maintenance and care, steel structures can last decades. This is due to the durability of steel. Steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio, meaning it can support a heavy load without adding more structural pressure on the structure. Steel also has a high tensile strength, making it impact-resistant.
Long-Term Value for School Districts
Steel provides a high ROI. This is in part due to its longevity but also the low maintenance cost associated with the material. Many structures constructed with a steel framework can go decades without any major repairs or damage. Steel maintains its structural integrity over time, even in high-humidity climates. Generally, the only maintenance steel requires is inspections and occasional recoatings when needed.
