For over 20 years the Frost Bank Tower has been an iconic symbol of Texas’ capitol city. Located in Downtown Austin, the distinctive facade and unique design has stood out along the Austin skyline and become one of the most recognizable buildings in the city. At the time of the tower’s construction, it was the tallest building in Austin and set the tone for future buildings and projects.
Project Overview
The Frost Bank Tower is 515 feet tall with 33 stories and about 510,000 square feet. The top of the tower is designed to resemble an owl which represents strength and wisdom. Myrex Industries team provided the structural steel crown of the building along with the general contractor, Structure Tone – STO Building Group, who helped make the project a success.
Sustainability and Steel
When the Frost Bank Tower was built, it was constructed with many sustainable and energy-saving features. The exterior of the building is constructed of a blue reflective glass facade that reflects sun rays, reducing the amount of energy needed to cool the building. The Frost Bank Tower was the first building in downtown Austin to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification in the Existing Buildings category. Using steel supports sustainable practices and initiatives by helping to cut down on waste and being highly recyclable. Steel is one of the most recycled materials, with over 90% of steel being recycled for construction uses.
