A Houston-area school is in the process of building a new academic facility that will serve the school district for athletics, performing arts, community events, UIL events, and extracurricular competitions. The new multi-use building was part of a bond program that was voted on and passed in 2022. Our team has had the opportunity to work on and fabricate the steel for the new academic facility.
Project Overview
The structural steel for the 156,571-square-foot academic facility will support a 4,000-seat arena and a 1,000-seat performance hall, as well as an academic and recital hall, a large open lobby, an art gallery, dressing and locker rooms, and more. The roof trusses are 19 feet deep and clear-span 185 feet. The entry space will feature symmetrical rolled lobby stairs that are 14 feet wide. Our team is fabricating 1,737 tons of steel for the project and has been working with general contractor Durotech to complete the state-of-the-art facility.
Project Stats & Details
Total Tons of Steel: 1,737 tons
Project Square Feet: 156,571 sq. ft.
General Contractor: Durotech
Steel Roof Trusses
The steel construction of the building allows for a long-span roof system, which creates large, open spaces that are unobstructed by support pillars or columns. This is specifically important in a building like this with so many performing and multi-use spaces. This also allows for a beautiful open entry and lobby space.
Supporting Design: Symmetrical Lobby Staircases
Structural steel provides the support for the 14-foot-wide staircases. The wide symmetrical staircases will not only serve as functional stairs but also as an architectural and design focal point of the lobby.
